APD: Not clear what caused death of man found in crawlspace after SWAT encounter


A sixty six-yr-previous man discovered lifeless within the crawlspace of an East Anchorage house early Tuesday after a SWAT standoff didn’t die from gunshot wounds, police stated Wednesday.

Police identified the person as Dan DeMott however offered no further details of the incident that led to his dying or its cause.

Officers responded to the home within the 8500 block of Shrub Courtroom at about 7 p.m. Monday after a call reporting a person armed with a sword and gun who had verbally assaulted a family member.

No one in the residence was injured, police spokesman MJ Thim stated.

A SWAT staff deployed fuel into the home round midnight and a second individual inside, recognized Wednesday as forty five-yr-previous Michael Girardin, came out, Thim stated. He was questioned and charged with resisting arrest.

Officers continued negotiating with DeMott into Tuesday morning, Thim stated. They ultimately entered the house and found him lifeless in a basement crawlspace.

DeMott’s demise does not look like suspicious, he stated. “How he died, we’re unsure. There don’t look like any gunshot wounds.”
